The Moral Dimension of Freedom of Expression
Although freedom of expression is a fundamental right, its use cannot be separated from the moral and ethical dimensions of citizenship. Democracy depends not only on legal guarantees, but also on the maturity of society in using that freedom. In situations where alleged injustice, intimidation of activists, or controversial state policies arise, society is required to have a moral sensitivity to the possibility of abuse of power. Support for the government that is given reflexively, without considering the broader social and political context, risks turning into political fanaticism.
An overly defensive attitude towards power can hinder the process of seeking truth and weaken the function of public control over the state. In the long term, this kind of condition has the potential to damage the quality of democracy. On the other hand, criticism of the government is also not immune to problems. Criticism based on assumptions, accusations without evidence, or unverified information can worsen polarization and degrade the quality of public discourse. Therefore, freedom of expression demands intellectual responsibility from every citizen.
A healthy democracy requires a rational and open public discussion space. In that space, criticism of the government is understood as a form of democratic oversight, while defense of the government is understood as part of the political freedom of citizens. The problem is not the existence of these two positions, but how the two are brought together in public discourse. When debate turns into mutual delegitimization, the space for democracy actually narrows. Criticism is labeled as a political attack, while defense is accused of being propaganda. In fact, a mature democracy is characterized by the ability of society to debate rationally, test arguments based on facts, and accept the possibility that the truth is not always on one side. Without this kind of discourse ethics, freedom of expression risks turning into a mere battle of narratives that deepens polarization.
