Legal Literacy - Instead of upholding justice, the opposite has been happening lately. This is a great irony for a rule of law country. Indonesia as a rule of law country is not just jargon, but a constitutional mandate that is clearly stated inArticle 1 Paragraph (3) of the 1945 Constitution.
This article should be a wake-up call for all of us, including law enforcement officials, to uphold the rule of law in our beloved country, the Republic of Indonesia. However, the reality on the ground often presents a different picture. There have been too many legal events that have injured the public's sense of justice. The problem of throwing a helmet at a school child until he fell into a coma has not been resolved, and the situation has been exacerbated by the tragedy of an online ojek driver who was run over and died.
If practices like this continue to be shown to the public, will violence after violence continue to occur without the enforcement of sovereign law?
The founding fathers (Founding Fathers) have signaled to the successors of this nation to always prioritize the law over all events that occur. However, unfortunately, the opposite is often practiced. Isn't it ironic? These are questions that must be answered by lawbreakers. Unfortunately, the answer often does not lead to fair law enforcement with various excuses.
Of course, as a society that still believes in the law, we are waiting for the President's firmness to instruct strict law enforcement on all these events, especially events that result in loss of life and are suspected of being carried out intentionally. The law is the people's vehicle to achieve sovereignty, but it seems increasingly difficult to achieve in this country. Is that really the case? Hopefully not.
Crimes for any reason should be resolved through legal channels. Crimes should not be resolved simply by apologizing and then considering the matter resolved. There are lives lost and irreplaceable, but the law has not been enforced to the fullest extent.
Indonesia clearly adheres to the understanding that law is the supreme commander in this country. Chairuman Harahap in his book entitled Supremacy of Law emphasizes that every event that befalls society must respect the law by enforcing the law itself.
There is great hope from the public that the President will take strategic and measured steps to optimize law enforcement in recent events. A "rule of law country" must be a real aspiration for society, not just a theory.
The public certainly awaits the firmness of the Chief of Police to take wise steps and investigate this incident in accordance with public expectations, namely the upholding of the rule of law even if the incident involves his own institution. The people need sensitivity and proof of concern that Indonesia is still faithful to the sound of the constitution: a state of law, not a state of power.
Indonesia as a large and sovereign nation must continue to improve for the progress of a free and responsible nation. Freedom of expression is certainly a nutritious means to promote a healthy nation based on democracy. Without freedom of expression and the enforcement of justice, it is impossible for a nation to survive with all its hustle and bustle.
If the law is sovereign, then the people are guaranteed.
