JAKARTA, Legal Literacy — The panel of judges of the Jakarta High Court increased the prison sentence against Muhammad Arif Nuryanta to 14 years in a bribery case concerning the handling of a case that resulted in the release (onslag) of three crude palm oil (CPO) corporations. Arif is the former head of the South Jakarta District Court.
In addition to the imprisonment, the appellate court also imposed a fine of Rp500 million with a subsidiary provision of 140 days imprisonment if the fine is not paid. Arif is also obliged to pay replacement money of Rp14,734,276,000; if not paid and assets are insufficient, the substitute criminal penalty is set at 6 years in prison.

Appeal decision for other defendants
In a separate appeal case, the sentence against inactive judge Djuyamto was reported to have increased to 12 years in prison, with fine of Rp500 million as well as replacement money of IDR 9.2 billion (subsidiary 5 years).
Meanwhile, for Agam Syarief Baharudin and Ali Muhtarom, the appeal decision was reported to have remained the same as the first instance, namely 11 years in prison, fine of Rp500 million, as well as replacement money of IDR 6.4 billion.
Background of the first instance verdict
Previously, at the first instance in the Jakarta Corruption Court (Central Jakarta District Court), Arif was sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison. The decision also included a fine of IDR 500 million and replacement money of IDR 14.734 billion with a substitute criminal act for replacement money 5 years if the assets are insufficient.
In the same first-instance decision, Djuyamto, Agam, and Ali were each sentenced to 11 years in prison, while the former junior registrar of civil affairs at the North Jakarta District Court Wahyu Gunawan was sentenced to 11 years and 6 months.
